Using Decodable Books to Support Your Early Reader

The decodable books section at Atglen Public Library

On Tuesday, October 15 at 6:30pm at the Atglen Public Library, OPLC Reading Specialist Shirley Williams will share research-based strategies that caregivers can use at home to support their children who are learning to read. Decodable Books help beginning readers learn to read by focusing on phonics as the primary skill to decode words. Focusing on phonics, rather than guessing the words based on pictures, helps to produce stronger readers. The information will apply to caregivers of children in Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Atglen Public Library was one of ten libraries in Senator Katie Muth's district to receive a grant to provide decodable books to community families. All of the books may be borrowed for three weeks. Other information to support your family on their reading journey is also available.
